Quotable Quotes

"From 1990 to 2005, the increase in the number of people living beneath the government's poverty line (now about $20,000 for a family of four) was 3,365,000; the increase in the number of Hispanics living below the poverty line over the same period was 3,362,000.. . . [M]uch of it was illegal [aliens]. -- Robert Samuelson

problem with that poverty line is that it only measure cash income..it does not take into consideration subsidized food, housing, and medical bills...nor does it figure the earned income credit at tax time which can be considerable.

I just can't find any sympathy for the working poor..they have made the decision somewhere in their lives to be poor...no, probably not a conscience decision "I decide to be poor the rest of my life." but decisions such as dropping out of school, getting a criminal record, drug and alcohol abuse, having kids out out of wedlock, and other such BAD decisions are why the majority of poor people are poor. Damn f it is my fault nor do I want to pay so they can have the same middleclass life style that I have busted ass for..and enjoy.

As far as the illegal criminal aliens..fuck em and send them back to whereever they came from.

A quibble, Guy. The poverty line is determined simply by the amount of income reported. If I had cash income of $1 million a year (I don't.) and didn't report it, I'd be "living in poverty" even if my home was a servent-filled McMansion. (By the way, it's not.)

With all the blather about how more children (of course it's always the children) are living in poverty than ever before, the quote I pulled from Samuelson's op-ed really stuck. Considering the current economy it's just not possible. I've wondered if illegal aliens were part of the computations and, there it is.

Which also ridiculously skews the number of "working poor" that so desperately need a raise in the minimum wage to survive, doncha think?
